South Lake Minnetonka Police Department (SLMPD) and other law enforcement agencies along the Highway 7 corridor received a $450,000 grant to improve safety on Highway 7. The 2025 Hwy 7 Safe Road Zone Grant period concluded on June 30, 2025. Over the course of the grant period (Spring to Summer 2025), the Highway 7 Safety Coalition led a collaborative effort that prioritized traffic enforcement, public outreach, and utilization of new technologies, such as an AI camera (see image) that detects distracted driving, including use of cell phones and seat belts, and notifies nearby officers. Coalition members focused on speeding, distracted driving, impaired driving, and other dangerous driving behaviors along the Hwy 7 corridor.
Throughout the summer and fall of 2025, the Coalition will review data collected before, during, and following the grant period to assess the effectiveness of the program. Final year-end enforcement totals, program highlights, and milestones have been published in a memo (PDF) by SLMPD Sergeant Adam Moore.
