Voters have two more chances to visit their polling places in 2024

• August 13 - Primary Election. Polls are open from 7 AM to 8 PM.  
• November 5 - General Election. Polls are open from 7 AM to 8 PM.

Your next election is the State Primary election on August 13, 2024. 

Your ballot will contain all state and federal offices requiring a primary, except president and vice president. All candidates will appear on one ballot in this election. Offices that may appear on the State Primary ballot in August include: U.S. Senator, U.S. Representative and State Representative.

Sample ballots are available beginning 46 days before each election. 

• View the candidates that will be on your ballot. (Available starting June 28 for the State Primary election.)
• View a sample ballot at city hall during the absentee voting period (June 28 - August 12).

What is a primary election?

A primary election determines which candidates will be on the ballot in the November general election.

• Partisan offices: Partisan offices will list a political party next to a candidate's name on the ballot. All state and federal offices are partisan offices. Partisan candidates will be listed in multiple columns on the primary ballot. Each column will list the candidates for one major party, by office. *Note: In a partisan primary, you can only vote for candidates from one political party (i.e. from one column on the partisan side of the ballot). If you vote for candidates from more than one political party, your votes will not count as that is considered cross-party voting. You decide when you vote which one of the parties you will vote for - Minnesota does not have political party registration. There is only one ballot style for a partisan primary, you do not need to declare your party to participate in the State Primary election. 
• Nonpartisan offices: Nonpartisan offices will not list a political party next to a candidate name on the ballot. For example, county, city and school board offices are nonpartisan. Nonpartisan offices will be listed on the opposite side of the ballot from partisan offices. You can vote for any candidate in any of the offices on your ballot. The candidates who get the most votes will be on the November general election ballot.
