Volunteer Opportunities
Project-Based
Adopt a Storm Drain
Storm drains are a direct pipeline to nearby rivers and lakes. Keeping your local storm drain clear of leaves, trash and other debris will ensure that these materials do not end up in local waters. It also helps prevent localized flooding that occurs if storm drains become clogged. Clean both the storm drain and the area around it. Dispose of trash, leaves and grass you find there in the proper way. Adopt your local drain at mn.adopt-a-drain.org.
Adopt a Garden
Every Spring and Summer, the City of Shorewood hosts volunteers to plant and maintain Shorewood park signs, rain gardens and plazas, and areas around the Shorewood Community and Event Center.
Freeman Park Cleanup
In April, a group of dedicated volunteers came together to remove dead and down trees and branches in Freeman Park. Cleanup efforts are scheduled to resume on May 11. We invite you to join us from 9 am - 12 pm, to continue to help remove debris following the Freeman Park Buckthorn Removal Project. Volunteers can expect to pull branches from the woods to stack near trails for city crews to chip up.
Shorewood Recycling Committee
Recycling committee members work with the City’s Recycling Coordinator to come up with ways to educate and get residents involved with traditional and organics recycling. Shorewood’s recycling committee meets periodically throughout the year based on project needs.
Events
Arctic Fever
The Arctic Fever Committee is looking for volunteers to work at various locations and events during the Arctic Fever Winter Festival, the third weekend in January. For information or to volunteer, call the city at 952-960-7900.
South Lake Safety Camp
We’re looking for Volunteer Camp Counselors! South Lake Safety Camp is an opportunity for kids to learn about fire and life safety while getting hands-on experiences with firefighters, police officers, paramedics and educators. Safety camp counselors (ages 17+) and Junior Camp Counselors (ages 12-17) bring the FUN to camp and help with a variety of tasks. Volunteers receive an event t-shirt and water bottle, lunch and snacks.
Oktoberfest
Volunteers are the key to making our events successful. Responsibilities range from assisting with setup, monitoring activities, assisting with parking, preparing snacks, and more. We’re sure to have a role that you’d enjoy!
Spring Cleanup & Paper Shred Event
We're looking for volunteers to help at our annual citywide drop-off and paper shred event. Volunteers will greet residents, help guide traffic, and unload paper from cars. If interested, please send an email to cityhall@shorewoodmn.gov.
Boards & Commissions
A great way to become active and participate in your community is to join one of the City’s boards or commissions. Advisory boards and commissions provide for community participation in issues concerning the City of Shorewood and our residents. Board and commission members are responsible for making recommendations to City Council on related issues.
