Community Connections

I enjoyed chatting with so many of you at your recent neighborhood "Night to Unite" parties; thank you for the invitations. At these parties, I was asked many questions but the two most frequently asked questions were:

1. What is the status of the Eureka Road/Highway 7 intersection?
2. What can be done about speeding on Shorewood roads?

MnDOT's Highway 7 Safety Study is Complete

Last summer, after a fatal collision at the intersection of Eureka Road and Highway 7, I wrote a letter to the Commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) which described the unsafe nature of the Highway 7 corridor. I simultaneously released this letter to the public. This letter included the names of the state representatives that Shorewood residents could contact to voice their concerns about the safety of this intersection or the safety of Highway 7 in general.

Thank You Shorewood residents for taking action and contacting your state reps. and MnDOT. As a result of the sheer volume of your sincere, loud and repetitious concerns, MnDOT conducted a Highway 7 traffic corridor safety study. Their study lasted nearly one year and the results of their study are now in a report.

This study results will be presented by a MnDOT representative at the Shorewood City Council meeting on August 22, 2022, at 7 pm As with every city council meeting, this meeting is open to the public and you are welcome to attend. If you are unable to attend in person, you can view our meeting via a zoom link which will be posted on the city website on Monday morning or you can view a recording of the meeting which will be posted on our city website several days after the meeting.

Speeding on Shorewood Roads

Contact the South Lake Minnetonka Police Department (SLMPD) directly with your specific concerns about speeding on Shorewood roads. Our SLMPD serves four cities, including Shorewood.

SLMPD Chief Brian Tholen will also be in attendance at the August 22, 2022, Shorewood City Council meeting to present the SLMPD annual budget report. He will not be discussing the speeding issue during this business meeting. However, Chief Tholen is aware of your concerns and he is willing to answer your questions regarding speeding in the Shorewood City Hall atrium at the conclusion of his annual budget presentation.

Upcoming Events

I hope to see you at Shorewood's Movie in Freeman Park on September 9. Activities begin at 7 pm; the movie "The Jungle Book" begins at approximately 8 pm. Another great community event is the Excelsior Fire District Open House and Safety Fair which will be held on October 6, 2022.

Please Speak up and Help make Highway 7 safer!

MnDOT is studying the Highway 7 corridor to identify needed safety improvements. The study includes evaluating the Highway 7 intersections which impact Shorewood.

How can you help?

After you've watched the presentation, please use the interactive comment map to note YOUR safety concerns, ideas or questions for the Highway 7 corridor; you can click on any and all intersections that concern you and write specific comments about those intersections. The interactive comment map is on the MnDOT project page.

After the conclusion of this traffic safety study, MnDOT will prepare a formal report and outline actions that will be taken in response to each safety issue listed in the team's draft report.

Residents, YOU SPOKE UP after the fatal collision at Eureka and Highway 7 occurred this past summer. SPEAK UP AGAIN! Report your concerns and ideas on the MnDOT interactive comment map. A large display copy of the traffic study map is located in Shorewood City Hall for hand-written comments.
